The East Asia Study Center (EASC) partnered with the Department of International Relations, University of Dhaka and the Bangladesh Institute of Law and International Affairs (BILIA) to organize a National Seminar on “Maritime Security in the 21st Century: A Bangladesh Perspective” at the Special Seminar Room, Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban, University of Dhaka on 27 May 2014. The main focus of this seminar was to pool the ideas on maritime security of Bangladesh from both the academics and maritime practitioners, the Bangladesh Navy. The seminar was divided into three sessions – an Inaugural Session and two working sessions. Professor Ashequa Irshad, Chair of the Department of International Relations, University of Dhaka and Professor Dr. Delwar Hossain, Director of EASC, University of Dhaka delivered their welcome notes in the inaugural session. Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Dhaka, was present as the Chief Guest. He emphasizes that maritime security is an indispensible part of comprehensive security of a country. The speakers in the first working session on “Maritime Security and Foreign Policy” were Professor Delwar Hossain and Ms. Lailufar Yasmin while the designated discussant was Professor M. Shahiduzzaman and Ambassador Ashfaqur Rahman. The session was chaired by Rear Admiral ASM Baten, Vice Chancellor, BSMR Maritime University. The second working session was focused on “Challenges and Opportunities for Bangladesh Navy.” The speakers in the second session were Rear Admiral K S Hossain, (TAS), (CD), NCC, PSC- ACNS (P), Commodore Syed Maksumul Hakim, (ND), ncc, psc, and Commodore M Rashed Ali, (TAS), psc. The session was chaired by Professor Dr. Kawser Ahmed, Chair, Department of Oceanography, University of Dhaka. Dr. ASM Ali Ashraf delivered vote of thanks at the end of the seminar.
